| Detailed Objective: Early waves of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort (ECLS-B) collected information on infant feeding practices and types of milk/beverages consumed. Additional questions on eating habits are being contemplated for the kindergarten/1st grade waves. For consistency purposes, the additional questions being considered are the same as those that were asked of 5th graders in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 (ECLS-K). However, since the questions in the ECLS-B will be asked of parents of children in kindergarten/1st grade, this project aims to determine what time period works best for parents, and the most appropriate and least burdensome manner in which to obtain responses.
The project envisions conducting two waves of cognitive interviews and focus groups. The focus groups will provide insight into broader topics related to parents' ability to answer the set of test questions; the cognitive interviews will be used to ascertain more indepth understanding of mothers' abilities to recall what their children consumed and over what period of time, whether they can use the food categories and response options correctly, and any difficulties encountered with the questions. Findings from the first wave will be used to revise the questions for the second wave, which will then test the strategies that mothers use to answer the revised questions. |
