Project: United States Trends in Associations of Eating Patterns with BMI throughout the Lifecycle
Award Year: 2002
Amount of award, fiscal 2002: $228,250.00
Institution: Tufts University
Principal Investigator: Megan McCrory
Status: Completed
Detailed Objective: This study examines trends in associations between eating patterns and obesity and the relative strength of the associations for different age groups. It will provide insight into lifecycle changes in eating patterns, changes in the relationships between eating patterns and Body Mass Index (BMI) measures across age groups, and the potential contribution of these changes to the U.S. obesity epidemic. The increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity raises the question of the specific underlying causes that generate the long-term energy imbalances that result in weight gain.

The project will analyze data collected under USDA's 1977-78 Nationwide Food Consumption Survey and 1989-91, 1994-96, and 1998 Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals to examine the associations of BMI and eating patterns over time. Eating patterns to be examined include, but are not limited to, snacking, breakfast skipping, eating frequency, dietary variety, high-calorie beverage consumption, and eating out. Regression analyses will be conducted to quantify associations of BMI with eating patterns. In addition to eating patterns, covariates of the model will include ethnicity, income, education, sex, height, smoking, physical activity, macronutrients, and dietary fiber. The sample will be segmented by age. Special attention will be paid to changes in eating patterns throughout the lifecycle.
