Project: The Determinants of Overweight and Obesity Among Low-Income Children
Award Year: 1999
Amount of award, fiscal 1999: $124,999.12
Institution: Boston Medical Center
Principal Investigator: John Cook
Status: Completed
Detailed Objective: This work examines the determinants of obesity among low-income children with a focus on food insufficiency and food assistance program participation. The large increase observed in the prevalence of obesity, particularly among low-income children, makes it essential that we improve our understanding of the factors that affect obesity. Of particular interest are the findings that obesity, participation in food assistance programs, and food insufficiency each occur most commonly among low-income children. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III, this work will determine whether food insufficiency and food assistance program participation influence the likelihood of obesity, after controlling for possible confounding factors such as the child's birthweight. A cooperative research agreement was awarded to the Department of Pediatrics, Center for Nourishing the Future, Boston Medical Center at a cost of $124,999 in fiscal 1999. The work is expected to be completed by October 2002.
