Detailed Objective: The Department of Nutrition at the University of California, Davis is internationally recognized for its leadership in both nutrition education and research. The Nutrition Education Research Group is a collaboration of faculty in the department with interests in the design and evaluation of nutrition education programs. A central focus of their efforts has been to identify approaches to curriculum development and evaluation that are meaningful in ethnically diverse, low-income audiences served by food assistance programs. This group, together with faculty from departments of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California at Berkeley and at Davis, administers the Small Grants Program to support research on the nutritional effects of food assistance. Their program emphasizes multidisciplinary approaches, the relationships between nutrition indicators and other measures of well-being and program costs, and the impact of links between poverty and obesity that may not be addressed by food assistance programs. In fiscal 1999 the Department of Nutrition at University of California, Davis funded five projects, for which detailed project descriptions are not yet available.
