Detailed Objective: The objective of this study is to improve and expand the understanding of effects that U.S. Department of Agriculture's food and nutrition assistance programs have on food consumption, nutrient availability and intakes, dietary quality, nutritional status, and health outcomes. This study will produce a document which the USDA can use to: (1) answer questions concerning the diet, nutrition, and health impacts of USDA food and nutrition assistance programs; and (2) assess the state of scientific knowledge regarding the diet, nutrition, and health impacts of USDA food and nutrition assistance programs. A contract was awarded to Abt Associates, Inc., for $526,358. The project was amended for $209,090 in fiscal 2000. Additional funding of $62,932 was provided in fiscal 2002 to expand tabular analysis to include distributions of usual intakes. The expected completion date is September 2003.
