Award Year: 1998

Principal Investigator: Carol Kramer-LeBlanc

Detailed Objective: Since the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) food packages were originally formulated in the 1970s, changes have occurred in Federal dietary guidance with the publication of the 1992 Food Guide Pyramid and the 1995 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. For each WIC target population group, the project will establish a current profile of nutritional needs based on the 1995 Dietary Guidelines and identify relevant recommended dietary allowances or dietary reference intakes. In addition, recommendations for dietary intakes in terms of numbers of food group servings will be identified for the target groups, when they exist. The WIC food packages currently offered will be assessed for nutrient composition to determine how well they meet supplementation needs of the target populations.
